2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games plans to build container houses for athletes' accommodation

Organizers for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and Asian Para Games have announced a new, highly efficient plan for athlete accommodation, choosing to build a temporary village using prefabricated container housing.

Located at the Garden Pier of Nagoya Port, the container housing is designed to accommodate approximately 2,000 athletes and will include essential facilities such as team headquarters and dining halls. This modular village, combined with a moored cruise ship at the nearby Kinjo Pier, will provide accommodation for a total of 6,000 people. Shuttle buses will connect the two locations, ensuring seamless transportation and communication among athletes. For the Asian Para Games, only the accessible container housing will be utilized.

This solution was chosen after initial plans for a permanent Athletes' Village were deemed too expensive and alternative decentralized housing options were rejected due to concerns about limiting athlete interaction. The decision to use container housing highlights a modern, cost-effective, and sustainable approach.

Aichi Prefecture Governor Hideaki Omura emphasized the versatility of the plan, stating that these "mobile accommodation facilities" can serve as temporary hotels for large-scale events and, crucially, can be repurposed as emergency temporary housing during a disaster. After the games conclude, the facilities will be disassembled and utilized for various purposes across Japan, further demonstrating their long-term value.
